The SafeX Method
Five stages, taught in every workbook.
Every SafeX workbook is built on the same five-stage progression — the pedagogical structure that helps a beginner move from a blank page to a resolved, realistic drawing.
- 01
Observation
Every workbook begins by teaching the eye. Before a single line is drawn, the student learns to read the subject — its edges, its proportions, the direction of light — and to distinguish what is actually seen from what is assumed.
- 02
Construction
Complex subjects are broken down into simple geometric forms. Circles, ovals, axes and boxes become the scaffolding on which every accurate drawing is built. The method is deliberate, repeatable and legible on the page.
- 03
Guided Practice
Skills are introduced one at a time and reinforced through short, progressive exercises. Each page assumes only what has been covered before it, so difficulty accumulates gradually and confidence has room to grow.
- 04
Realistic Rendering
Once construction is stable, the workbook turns to value, texture and depth. Pencil grade, pressure and stroke direction are taught as tools — the vocabulary that turns an accurate outline into a finished drawing.
- 05
Independent Drawing
The final chapters ask the student to apply the method to their own references. The scaffolding falls away. What remains is a way of seeing and a set of habits that transfer to any subject the student chooses next.
Designed for real learning
The philosophy behind every workbook.
SafeX workbooks are built to be used, not admired. Every design decision — from the sequencing of exercises to the choice of paper size — is made in service of one thing: helping a beginner develop lasting drawing skill.
Structured progression
Each workbook follows an intentional order. Skills are introduced when the student is ready for them and revisited when they need to be reinforced — the same way a good classroom would sequence a course.
Beginner-friendly
No prior drawing experience is assumed. Terms are defined the first time they appear, tools are kept minimal, and every exercise begins from a form of practice a beginner can actually complete.
Printable practice
The workbooks are designed to be printed and worked on directly, page by page. Physical practice — pencil on paper — remains the most reliable way to build the hand-eye coordination that drawing requires.
Deliberate repetition
The same construction principles reappear across chapters in slightly different contexts. Repetition is not filler; it is how a technique becomes an instinct rather than a memorised set of steps.
Confidence through practice
The workbooks are paced so that the student sees measurable progress from one week to the next. Confidence in drawing is not a mindset — it is the natural result of finishing pages that were once out of reach.
Learning outcome
After completing this workbook, you will confidently draw horses from reference — head, body, legs and movement — using the four-shape construction method and layered graphite shading.
The Academy
A studio for people who want to actually learn.
Why the academy exists
SafeX Drawing Academy was founded on a straightforward observation: most beginners who want to learn to draw eventually give up — not because the discipline is inaccessible, but because the material available to them is either too abstract, too advanced, or too decorative to teach anything durable. The academy exists to close that gap.
How the workbooks are made
Each workbook is developed as a structured educational publication. Lessons are written and sequenced before any illustration is produced, then tested against the real difficulties a beginner encounters on the page. References are selected for pedagogical clarity, not visual novelty. The final PDF is typeset for print, so the workbook can be held in the hand and worked on directly.
Attention to progression
The order of the pages matters as much as the content of the pages. Every workbook is paced so that a student who follows it from the first day to the last is never asked to do something the material has not yet taught. Progression is the quiet subject of every SafeX book.
Observation over tracing
The academy teaches drawing through observation and construction, not tracing. Tracing produces a copied image; observation produces a skill that transfers to the next subject, and the next. That distinction shapes every decision — from the way references are framed to the way each exercise is introduced.
Materials needed
Almost nothing. Just paper and time.
